Not sure what instrument to pick? Check out the videos below!
Is my child guaranteed to play the instrument of his/her choice?
A band or orchestra must have a balanced instrumentation in order to have a great sound. During the first and second week of school, each student will choose their first choice of instrument, and if the instrumentation is balanced, everyone will get their first choice. It is likely, though, that a large number of students will choose one particular instrument. If we have too many people who want to play the same instrument, we will then assign volunteering students their second or third choice instrument. Just like in sports, an ensemble that has 20 trumpets and only 2 trombones (or 40 violins and 1 cello) will be about as successful as a baseball team with 3 pitchers and no catcher. Students who already have an instrument (from an older sibling, summer camp, etc) will more likely be assigned that instrument, unless they are willing to play something that is really needed in the ensemble. |
Please note that the videos below were created summer 2020, so some of the instructions are not up to date. Please ignore instructions regarding instrument choice surveys. This year we are not asking for students to commit to an instrument choice just yet. We will give all of our accepted applicants the opportunity to choose their instrument at a later date.
